Ask the Expert: How do I Plan a Sensational Event with the Latest Stylish Décor
February 5, 2010
Q.
What are the latest trends in party décor that will really “wow” my guests?
A.

Discover 2010’s Biggest Trends in Party Décor
From metallics to monochromes, this season’s standouts in party décor can take your event from functional to fantastic with just a few of the latest trends.
1. Ornate Furniture.
This year, the event industry’s style pendulum swings back from extreme minimalist/ modular toward more ornate design, reminiscent of French Baroque. Look for white or black painted wood with tufted upholstery and decorative carving in both lounge and table seating for a regal and elegant look.
2. Metallic Linen.
An updated variation on lamé, event planners are seeing metallic linen carry over from the fashion world. For glittering sophistication, this trend is materializing in table linens, chair covers and more, in the form of cutwork overlays, paillettes and metallic flocking.
3. Illuminating Options.
Drum lampshades lend a mid-century modern feel to a room. Form the lamp base by placing an LED puck light within a tall glass vase, top with a drum shade, then place the lamps in linear formation on rectangular tables for major impact. Or for a posh event, look to the chandelier. Morphing from the hanging crystal into a more modern shape, this year’s chandeliers will feature clear or mesh drum shades over the luminaries.
4. Black and White Accessories.
Planners will see more black and white accessories competing with the traditional silver. This includes charger plates, opaque glass vases, and candelabra painted in a glossy black or white.
5. Large Graphic Prints.
Look for bold graphic prints in table linen and draping (such as Velon) as well as vinyl decals and paper wraps applied to tent windows, vases, mirrors, and acrylic seating.
6. Intimate Branding.
Instead of large banners, a brand makes a greater impact when temporarily decaled onto a charger plate or an acrylic bar. Planners may choose to affix branded Gobo lighting so it is directed on floor of the event entrance, or even stamp their brand into snow or sand.
7. Faux Natural Fiber.
Although “natural” table linens are in demand, fabrics such as cotton and linen do not lend themselves to the event rental market due to staining and high maintenance costs. Instead, “faux” fibers offer a cost effective alternative, as only the trained eye can tell that these linen/cotton look-alikes are not the real thing.
8. Table Caps.
Planners can easily place these fitted fabric caps over the top portion of a square or round table, extending it approximately 5” over the edge. They offer a variation on the classic square overlay, giving the table a sleeker and more custom look.

The hardest part about planning that all-important summertime corporate retreat, outing, company picnic, party, conference or team-building session isn’t the planning itself; it’s deciding which activity, get-together, festival, concert or event to select for your guests.
