Madison's Historic Edgewater Hotel to Reopen in 2014

The Edgewater

The historic Edgewater hotel in Madison, Wis., will reopen in August 2014 following a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion, developer Robert Dunn announced yesterday.

Originally opened in 1948, the hotel — located on Lake Mendota, near the University of Wisconsin-Madison — was closed for redevelopment in late 2012. Although it was neglected in its most recent years, it has hosted numerous dignitaries and celebrities during its 65-year history, including Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and Elton John, just to name a few.

When it reopens next summer, the property will include a new hotel tower with a ballroom, restaurant, and additional meeting and event spaces. Additionally, its two existing buildings — one built in the 1940s, the other in the 1970s — will undergo a historic restoration. Finally, a new public plaza will host outdoor events and feature year-round activities, including an ice rink.

All told, the three buildings will include 202 guest rooms, four dining options and over 8,000 square feet of meeting space.

“There is a sense of community ownership of The Edgewater,” Dunn said in a statement. “The Edgewater was built to offer an escape to guests — a place where the effortless and authentic hospitality of the people in our community define the property’s personality. Our hope is to reignite a sense of pride for The Edgewater with the Madison community and establish a new standard of inclusive excellence for both our local and visiting guests.”
