Bigger and better: McNamara expanding event space

MINNEAPOLIS — Meeting planners will have a bigger and better reason to book the McNamara Alumni Center—voted Best Meeting & Event Facility (Non-Hotel) by Minnesota Meetings & Events 2007+2008—by Fall 2010. The sought-after University of Minnesota venue, known for its stunning architecture and organic décor, is expanding with a new addition, its first since opening in 2000.

“Conference and fundraiser planners will be especially pleased to have nine spaces to utilize, including two new, versatile, medium-sized rooms,” says Amy Leyden, marketing manager. The new space will make McNamara ideal for hosting large, complex events that require registration, separate reception and dinner areas, a staff headquarters, entertainment Green Room, storage and more. The new rooms add 4,500 sq. ft. of
meeting space.

For example, the intimate new Gathering Space—featuring lounge furniture, artwork and wireless Internet—will accommodate conference registrations and networking, away from, but in sight of, Memorial Hall. As well, a north-south corridor will improve traffic flow throughout the building; the new Gold Room—similar in size to the Johnson Great Room—will
feature copper walls, wood ceiling, and built-in AV; and a new yet-to-benamed space—perfectly sized for a 100-to-150-guest reception—will feature copper-and-wood walls and lots of natural light. “The addition creates a second, distinct event zone with as much architectural appeal as our current rooms,” says Leyden.

Capacities and pricing for the new rooms will be available by mid-February. Bookings can begin anytime for events starting Fall 2010.

The construction of the new rooms coincides with the McNamara Alumni Center’s 10th Anniversary. Meeting and event planning industry members are invited to a free luncheon Tuesday, March 9 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Planners will have the opportunity to see the construction progress and enjoy a tongue-in-cheek tribute to our industry in comedy, satire, and song.
