Hands-on Teambuilding on the Rise

Putting the “build” in teambuilding, some properties are offering groups truly hands-on activities that use communication, trust and camaraderie to work together and create a final product.

New York’s 106-room Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina has a Go Kart Challenge where teams work together to build a one-passenger go-kart, then race it on a designated course and win based on time, but also on creativity and design. The property offers 10,000 square feet of meeting space, including the 2,100-square-foot Farmhouse Ballroom.

Build-a-Sculpture is a workshop offered to groups at Casa Marina, a 311-room resort in Key West, Fla. A sand sculpturing class is led by the resort’s resident award-winning sculptor, and groups can work on anything from a simple sand castle to extravagant murals in the sand. The property’s 22,600 square feet of meeting space includes the 2,800-square-foot Keys Ballroom.

Build-a-Catapult, offered at Florida’s Westin Cape Coral at Marina, provides groups with PVC pipes and other basic catapult tools to launch various objects at targets. The 262-room hotel features 15,000 square feet of meeting space.

At the 3,717-room Hilton Hawaiian Village, on Waikiki Beach, groups can Build-a-Canoe with materials such as plastic and cardboard and then take the handmade boats out from the hotel’s lagoon. The resort can accommodate over 2,000 attendees in its 150,000 square feet of meeting space.
