"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." -- Henry David Thoreau

The styling of an event may seem like a daunting task to most, but for event designers, it is an art form. Of course, every single choice made in event planning has a visual impact on the final result. However, it’s our creative ability in styling an event that sets it apart.

Themes are the creative packages in which you wrap each event. Every element -- from the style of the invitations or menus, to the genre of entertainment selected -- contributes to the overall experience. Each element should be chosen to evoke the atmosphere envisioned by your clients, and ultimately, to create memorable moments for your guests.

Start with a Vision

The first thing needed to ensure the success of your themed event is a focused and well thought-out "vision." The most common mistake planners make is not spending enough time really developing an idea. An idea that has depth and weight in the world of event design is one with a clearly focused theme that you can weave into every detail, from the initial invitation to the last toast at the end of the night.

Mix a Palette of Senses

Start with the five senses and build around the concept you want to create.

• Smell – will there be a scent throughout the event with candles, flowers, or food?
• Touch – what texture will be represented in the linens, lighting, and venue?
• Taste – what flavors and unique food combinations will be incorporated in your menu?
Sight – what is the impression you want to create when the guests first walk in the room?
• Sound – what type of music or entertainment will be used to evoke a certain feel?

See the Big Picture

After taking the time to conceptualize what you want to create, design a strategy of how to include all of the elements that are important to the overall vision.

• Make a design board of pictures, thoughts, and ideas, as well as how you plan to execute them in the event.
• Concept how you’ll incorporate new and innovative ways to use lighting, linen, entertainment and décor to coincide with your theme.
• Focus on the guest experience and how they will be impacted by the event you have created.  What impression do you want them to take away after the event is over?

Creating a concept or theme for your event is a brilliant way to ensure that it will be effective, memorable, and most importantly, engaging for your guests. With the right combination of details and creative planning, you’ll ensure your event leaves your guests saying "bravo!"
