Big Surprise — The Hidden Benefits of Choosing a Non-traditional Venue

While it might be a bit extreme to have your guests leap out of an airplane as an alternative to a traditional hotel ballroom team building, non-traditional venues (that don’t rely on surviving the event to enjoy it) are an option worth considering.

Why? Quite simply, they’re more memorable. Between unusual architectural, exciting experiences, or unforgettable themes, you may just discover that your event is the talk of the town for a long time to come.

Ready to run with the remarkable? Consider the following:

Zoo. How often can someone claim, “work today was an absolute zoo!” and have it actually be true? The Zoo gives your guests the chance to explore, to learn, to experience a different perspective on life than what they encounter on a daily basis. Unique spaces with unusual views can often be converted into meeting rooms or even dining areas. Zoos are a great fit for family-type events like those associated with a company picnic, but can also work well for team-building exercises.

Ball park. You can’t possibly strike out with an event at the ball park. Include admission to the game for your group, or explore the many meeting spaces available, often times with spectacular views of the field. Private boxes or even locker rooms are sometimes available to rent for your event. Just imagine the thrill when your team runs the bases on the very field where their home team does the same.

Art gallery. If you’re searching for a venue that will provoke interesting conversation among your guests, an art gallery or museum paints an interesting possibility. Many galleries and museums now have spaces dedicated to private group events, and may even allow you to rent out a gallery completely. Nothing inspires nor better encourages creative expression than engagement with great, beautiful, and even provocative art.

Amusement park / water park. Who knew work could be fun too? Consider a team building event at an amusement or water park that incorporates the rides into the overall goals. Scavenger hunts or team challenges with prizes can motivate any group. Bring in a caterer or choose “fair food” with an eye toward hot dogs, burgers, and fries. Many parks will offer pre-event discount tickets for groups that ensure no long ticket lines for your team.

Botanical garden. Get your group back to nature with a beautiful, moving, and sensory experience at a botanical garden. Often infused with art, birds, ponds, and waterfalls, a botanical garden is an ideal space for your team to collaborate, brainstorm, and get inspired. Guided walking tours and team building exercises encourage attendees to experience the space to its fullest.

Race Track. You can bet your crew will have a great time at the race track. Not only are there an abundance of activities, but there’s usually some pretty mouthwatering menu options, and a bevy of beverages from the bar too. Get your team on track with themed parties, like the Kentucky Derby, or casino nights with onsite table games and poker.

Vineyards / Brew Houses. Wine and craft beer tastings are especially popular these days. Bring your team for a tasting, a tour, and to try something savory and tempting. Look for festivals or themed events happening at these venues and plan your group gathering around them.
