New Mall of America hotel to open by mid-November

JW Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America
The new JW Marriott hotel at the Mall of America is tentatively scheduled to open mid-November, according to Marriott.

The 15-story hotel on the north side of the Bloomington mall is owned by Hotel Development LLC, an enterprise of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, and will be managed by Marriott International. It has been under construction since spring 2014.

Along with 342 guest rooms and suites, the hotel will feature a full-service bar and restaurant, fitness center, pool and 18,000 square feet of event space, according to Marriott. The hotel's ballroom will be able to accommodate 2,200 guests, making it one of the largest event spaces in the Twin Cities.

JW Marriott is described as a premier luxury brand, a step above the standard Marriott hotel but not as ritzy as the company's Ritz-Carlton hotels. Applications for jobs at the Mall of America hotel and restaurant are being accepted at jobs.marriott.com (search for Mall of America).

The hotel is part of a $325 million mall expansion aimed at attracting upscale shoppers with a new dining area, valet parking and 50 upscale retailers. The expansion also includes a seven-story office building.

The Mall of America recently announced plans to embark on yet another north-side expansion in the spring that will add another hotel, parking ramp, office building and luxury shopping.

That $500 million expansion is expected to open in October 2018.
