Prom Management to run St. Paul's Como, Phalen golf courses

St. Paul has turned over management of two money-losing city golf courses to private firm Prom Management Group.

Minnesota Public Radio reports on the deal, under which Oakdale-based Prom will pay a fee to run the Phalen and Como golf courses. The company's owner, Bill Given, said that he'll be able to turn a profit on the courses. From the sound of it, he plans to slim down the staff and give managers more flexibility to shift workers around where they're needed.

Prom Management currently runs food and beverage operations at two publicly owned Minneapolis courses and a private one in Lake Elmo.

St. Paul said last fall that it was looking to privatize the two courses after its four-course golf operation was on track to post a $1 million deficit. (A deal to improve the other two courses, which also lose money, with bonds keeps the city from privatizing those.)
