Treasure Island makes a splash

PRAIRIE ISLAND — Treasure Island Resort & Casino today opened another amenity to try to further establish itself as a destination for families.

Ribbon-cutting for the Lagoon Water Park and Wave Spa, a $19 million, 40,000-square-foot water park, was at 11 a.m. today. Work began last May.

Cindy Taube, public relations manager, took a few minutes this morning to offer more information:

What are some of the major features?

The Lagoon features a 320-foot-long river with rapids, a waterfall and an island in the middle of the pool with benches and lounge chairs. The river will wind around inside the building, but part of the water slide will go outside and then come back in.

The 119,000 gallons of water in all four pools will be cleaned by a green filtration system that uses natural sphagnum moss as a pre-filter water conditioner. It's also healthier for swimmers.

"The Barefoot Bar is the only swim-up bar in Minnesota, located in the adults-only section of the water park. There are also two hot tubs, one inside and out outside."

Finally, there are 14,000 square feet of outside terrace and fire pits.

The two body are 276 feet long; there is also a zero depth plunge pool that is 80 feet long.

The Wave Spa is a full-service salon and spa. "The relaxation room has a wall fire feature, lounge chairs and can accommodate up to 12 people. The fitness center has bikes, elliptical and treadmills."

In warm weather, two 12-foot retractable glass panels can be opened to give access to the outside.

How many jobs will be added?

More than 30; that will bring the Treasure Island workforce to more than 1,500.

Is it open to the public?

Yes. It's free to those staying at the resort's hotel and costs $14.95 for others.

Why did you add this feature?

"We've had people asking for it for a long time."

It's part of a wave of improvements at Treasure Island, including the Tado Steak House, renovations to the Tradewinds Buffet, a bowling alley and an arcade.

"The water park really does round out resort amenities our guests have been asking for for a long time."
