Bluefin Bay changes hands in latest North Shore resort sale

Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts

Another Minnesota resort on the North Shore of Lake Superior has changed hands.

The Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts was purchased by North Shore native Joe Swanson and his business partner, Pipasu Soni, on June 30, according to a news release from the business.

Longtime manager and co-founder Dennis Rysdahl listed the Tofte-area resorts for sale in early 2019 as part of a succession plan. Rysdahl will stay on in an advisory capacity until 2021-22.

Swanson is a Silver Bay native who worked at Bluefin Bay for seven years during high school and college in housekeeping, dining and maintenance positions. According to the release, owning the resorts is “a dream come true.”

The first condos at Bluefin Bay opened in 1984, followed by Temperance Landing in 2006 and Surfside in 2009. Combined, the three lakeside resorts have 229 bedrooms and can host up to 704 guests.

Also included in the sale are the resort’s three restaurants: the Bluefin Grille, Coho Cafe and Bakery, Waves of Superior Cafe; and the Waves of Superior Spa.

The parties involved in the sale agreed to not disclose the price.
