For more than 30 years, Edinburgh USA a has been a go-to spot in Brooklyn Park for golf enthusiasts. But if you’re looking for a decent meal, some Brooklyn Park City Council members weren’t exactly praising Edinburgh’s culinary offerings.

“The biggest problem that has been had at the golf course right now has been service,” said Bob Mata, speaking as a member of the city’s Economic Development Authority. “The food quality’s gone down, the service has gotten terrible.”

Lancer Hospitality is Edinburgh’s long-time food and beverage provider, but city officials say catering and restaurant sales have been stagnant.

“As someone who’s there every Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. for rotary, I know this place. I know what it was. I know what it is, and I dream of something better,” said Lisa Jacobson, also speaking as a member of the EDA.

With the contract set to expire, Brooklyn Park’s EDA (which owns Edinburgh) opted to go with D’Amico Catering.

‘I Think We Can Do Better’

“I don’t want to be too forward, but we think we can do better,” said Larry D’Amico of D’Amico Catering. “We think we can change this restaurant into something that’s there for, No. 1, the community.”

The new partnership means D’Amico will not only take over the catering in 2019, but also completely revamp Edinburgh’s restaurant.

“We hear from the community a lot that they want sit-down restaurant opportunities,” said Kim Berggren, Brooklyn Park’s community development director. “While this won’t be a new restaurant, it will be a completely refreshed and rebranded restaurant concept that will be developed and implement by D’Amico, who has a strong reputation for excellence in the restaurant business.”

The revamped restaurant is just one component of a $1.5 million investment the city is making toward Edinburgh. Brooklyn Park’s EDA members hope it’s an investment that will bring people to Edinburgh for reasons beyond golf.

“We’ll get the people that have stopped going to the golf course because of the poor service,” Bob Mata said. “So I think this is really gonna help the golf course and the restaurant and the catering business, and the city as well.”

Brooklyn Park city officials say construction on the refurbished restaurant will begin this winter, and hopefully open in the spring. The city also announced that there will be an outdoor wedding venue built at Edinburgh.
