Downtown hotel gets a new name

Des Lux Hotel
The Suites of 800 Locust in downtown Des Moines has a new name. The hotel's owners have rebranded the property now calling it Des Lux (pronounced deluxe) Hotel.

Rebound Hospitality of Northfield, Minn., paid $3.27 million for the 51-room hotel, 800 Locust St., last December. The company has invested about $500,000 on new seating, bedding, televisions, furniture in the lounge, Wi-Fi upgrades and other improvements, said Carl Deeken, general manager.

Rebound Hospitality specializes in historic properties. It also owns the Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah and two hotels in Minnesota.

The 102-year-old five-story hotel opened in 2001 after developer Bob Knapp spent an estimated $10 million to renovate the vacant commercial building, which originally served as the home of the Des Moines Club. The bar in the hotel, formerly called the Cosmopolitan Lounge, has been renamed Des Lux Bar.

Des Lux will have a grand opening event from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday with room tours, giveaways and live music.
