The "Mantique" Trend

Imagine a book-filled library in 1900 where British explorers meet to discuss their adventures.  Or perhaps a cluttered science laboratory filled with specimens and instruments.  This is the look of “Mantique.”  It’s a more masculine esthetic that we’re seeing reflected at events these days. Trickling down from home interiors, Mantique may be a backlash to the feminine shabby-chic trend. As such, you think crows instead of robins, preserved not fresh, leather as opposed to crystal.

The success of the Mantique look is based heavily on props and accessories. Shop antique and salvage stores for items such as vintage machinery, clocks, taxidermy animals and old books. Accessories can also emphasize vintage science — preserved nature pieces under bell jars, insects, odd gadgets — these items all appeal to a more masculine eye. Reflecting the appeal of this new look, you’ll now find a number of rental houses featuring masculine-inspired furniture and accessories.

In addition to accessories, there are a few basic items that will help to create the Mantique look:

  • A Chesterfield sofa, accented with wood side tables and comfortable armchairs.

  • Floral that is pared down — consider Black Beauty roses, palms, tropical stalks and organic pods.

  • A Faux fireplace

  • Linen in warm, neutral tones, with an emphasis on damasks and woven.

  • Lighting:  Lamplight is the optimal choice, but amber uplights, or pin spotting a specific accessory piece can also reflect the look
